Winter World Cup?

December 17th 2010 10:53
Qater world cup in 2022 could be held in Winter

FIFA president Sepp Blatter, today gave his backing to an idea that there could be a winter World Cup. With Qatar winning the right to host the tournament in 2022, question marks have been raised as to whether it could happen, in the traditional June and July slot. Temperatures reach 50 degrees Celsius that time of year, unbearable heat to play football in.

So now, it seems that the World Cup could be staged in either January or February. This to me, seems like a bit of a joke. The World Cup is like the Olympics, so much tradition, it shouldn't be changed for one country. If Qatar can't host the tournament in the Summer, they shouldn't host it, simple. If any other bidding nation had won the right to hold the World Cup in their country, the Summer tournament would go ahead as planned.

A World Cup in January, would throw domestic leagues in Europe into chaos. The Premier League for example. We are currently 17 league games through the season. Now suppose that in three weeks time, all of the teams stop for the World Cup, and resume the Premier League at the start of March. Is this really viable?

I am probably still a little bitter about the results of the FIFA voting for the 2018 World Cup, but FIFA really are irritating me now. Sepp Blatter seems to only care about taking the World Cup to new places. But what about keeping the tradition of the tournament alive? And what about actually hosting a realistic, and spectacular World Cup. To me right now, it seems that hosting a World Cup in Qatar, is going to be nothing but a struggle to achieve.

i'm on the fence here. I get what your saying that world cup should always be in summer, but surely Italy manage to have Winter break as it is? If we adopt the winter break a few years before 2022, it could work out OK?

I agree that is should be in the summer. This problem goes to show why it was so stupid that Qatar won the bid. FIFA is corrupt on a whole and nobody likes Bladder and his crap. They make such a big deal out of little nuances, but they never get the big picture stuff right; like instant replay. If the World Cup was in the winter, then it would run into the Winter Olympics which would be quite unfair for both events. The summer heat in Qatar is unbearable. Movable stadiums? BS. FIFA deserves to have these problems after picking Qatar.
