When Wigan Athletic were promoted to the Premier League, they were in a similar position to Blackpool this season. No one gave them a chance of staying up, but six years later, they are still here. However, this season could be the biggest challenge yet, to avoid relegation. The league is strong, and even before the campaign started, Wigan looked one of the weaker sides.
I like how Wigan operate. Dave Whelan is a loyal chairman, and has complete faith in his manger, Roberto Martinez. The squad is made up of a lot of young, talented players. A big problem for Wigan, is that they have acted in the past, is a feeder team to bigger Premier League sides. Signing players like Wilson Palacios, Pascal Chimbonda, Leighton Baines and Antonio Valencia when they were unknown, and letting them leave for better teams.
A key to their survival, could well be whether or not they keep hold of Charles N'Zogbia. As a Newcastle fan, I know all about the Frenchman's talent. But there is a danger, he could be the next star player to come, and go at Wigan. If he left, I fear there isn't enough quality in the squad, to keep them up for a seventh season.
