Following his form in guiding both Inter Milan to a League, Cup and Champions League treble last season, then guiding Holland to the World Cup Final, its fair to say Wesley Sneijder's stock has risen recently. The 26-year-old playmaker has been linked heavily with a move to England, and reportedly Manchester United were ready to pay up to £30 million for him. However, yesterday brought the news that Sneijder has signed a new five-year deal at Inter Milan. Keeping him at the club until the age of 31, Inter fans will be delighted to know their key man, will spend his best years at their club.
Stories about every top club in the world wanting Sneijder, are a long shot away from just over a year ago. Following new Real Madrid owner Florentino Perez's spending spree, bringing in Kaka, Cristiano Ronaldo, Benzema, Xabi Alonso and more, many world-class players were deemed surplus to requirements. Fellow Dutch star Arjen Robben moved to Bayern Munich. But Sneijder joined up with Jose Mourinho at Inter. In his previous five years at Ajax, he was considered one of the brightest young prospects in football. But his two year spell at Real, despite playing well, left him feeling a bit like damaged goods. Inter snapped him up for a cut price £8 million.
And what a piece of business that was! While Diego Milito's goals grabbed the headlines in Inter winning the Champions League, every fan knew who the key man was .. Wesley Sneijder. His creativity and control in the centre of the park was World-class. He showed this quality again at the World Cup, scoring vital goals in the group stage, to knock out Brazil in the Quarter Finals, and a goal in the Semi-Final against Uruguay. He ended the tournament joint top scorer, and second in the Golden Ball. To cap off his year, he is now nominated for the Fifa Ballon d'Or award, and is definitely a big contender to take the trophy home! So this new contract is great news for fans of Inter Milan, and of Italian football.
