This weekend saw some very entertaining matches, some very evenly matched ones, and also a couple of surprise results. Personally, from a Newcastle fan point of view, it was a brilliant weekend!
The early kick off on saturday finished 1-1 between Stoke City and West Ham. In a predictably tactical encounter, Scott Parker had the hammers in front at the break, before Kenywyne Jones salvaged a point for Stoke, which was West Ham's first point of the season. Aston Villa vs Bolton and Blackburn vs Fulham also finished 1-1. The fourth 1-1 draw of the day came in the evening game between Sunderland and Arsenal. After a total fluke put the Gunners ahead, as Fabregas blocked the ball into the net from 35 yards, Darren Bent scored a 95th minute equaliser for the home side.
West Brom made surprisingly easy work of a lacklustre Birmingham City, coming from 1-0 down at the break to win 3-1. Tottenham also came back from a 1-0 half time deficit, as they scored three goals in the last 13 minutes to snatch their first home win of the campaign. And in a pleasantly surprising result from Goodison Park, Newcastle won 1-0 away at Everton. Making his first start, Hatem Ben Arfa scored a stunning solo effort to gain the points for the Mags.
The most anticipated match of the weekend was on sunday, between Manchester United and Liverpool, and it did not disappoint. A hat-trick from Dimitar Berbatov beat the two goals scored by Steven Gerrard, to give United a crucial 3-2 victory. Their City rivals also picked up three points, winning 2-0 at Wigan, thanks to goals from Tevez and Yaya Toure.
Following Arsenal's draw, Chelsea moved four points clear at the top with an easy 4-0 win over Blackpool. Resting several key players, the Blues were four up by half time, and eased to victory with a coasting second half performance. Just five games into the season, and Chelsea have already netted 21 times! With Arsenal and Manchester United already four points adrift, Ancelotti's boys are looking good. Manchester City and Tottenham have moved up to 4th and 5th, while Everton and Wigan share the relegation zone with West Ham.
This coming midweek sees Carling Cup action, before the Premier League returns next weekend!
