Vettel on Pole!
November 13th 2010 17:52
Today's qualifying for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, saw German driver Sebastien Vettel grab pole position, posting the quickest lap at 1;39;39. Whilst he is on pole position for the race, Spaniard Fernando Alonso remains favourite for the title. If Vettel wins the race, 4th or higher would still gurantee Alonso the Drivers World Championship, and crucially, he qualified 3rd. It could have been very different, with the Championship leader needing a last gap best lap, to leapfrog him up from 5th.
Briton's Lewis Hamilton will join Vettel on the front of the grid, whilst Mark Webber seems to now, like Hamilton, only have an outside chance of being champion, as he will start 5th. Button will start 4th. It now looks like Alonso v Vettel for the title. All the German can do is win tomorrow, and hope Alonso slips back to 4th. Hamilton could be a determining factor in the title race, even if that means not winning it himself. But Red Bull could certainly do with Webber jumping ahead of Alonso, and giving themselves a chance of adding to the Constructors Championship they won last week.
Personally, though I'd love a miracle to happen and Hamilton become 2010 champion, I feel the season's two best drivers are now the only real contenders, Vettel and Alonso. Over the 19 races, they have impressed me most, with Vettel very often unlucky not to score more points. The youngster has proved time and time again in qualifying he is the quickest man in the field, in the quickest car. But after what happened in 2008, with Kimi Raikonnen snatching the title in the final race for an impossible position, who knows if Webber and Hamilton are out of it yet!
