Unexpectedly Expected

Cristiano Ronaldo has, shocked?, the football world by announcing his future may reside at Real Madrid sooner rather than later. Ronaldo has stated that he will consider his future after the upcoming Champions League final. And to me this comes as no surprise in an age where very few players have any sense of honor towards playing for their clubs. Too much concern with personal gain, and clubs overspending on players that will only leave in a few years to earn more money somewhere else, has tainted the game to some extent.
I personally find this blow to Manchester United almost comical, given the fact that less than a week ago Ryan Giggs was being praised for his years of dedication to the Red Shirts’ campaign. The fact that less than seven days and at the same club praise for a players dignity and commitment, and also Giggs’ humble attitude towards, for all intents and purposes, being a living legend. Then now completely contradicting his example, Ronaldo is going to, in all likelihood, abandon the team.
But perhaps this is a blessing in disguise, as it would place an awful lot of money in United’s hands. With a bidding war looming for Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov, and Man U’s interest in the striker, but previous disinterest in battling other clubs offers, perhaps now Sir Alex’s interest will be more than piqued. As Real Madrid are considering going as high as £100million to acquire Ronaldo, surely some of the money would be well spent on a forward the quality of Berbatov. Tevez always plays farther back than a forward normally would anyway, drop him to midfield and play Rooney upfront with Berbatov. You don’t need a Cristiano Ronaldo with an attacking combo like that.
