Following the departure of manager John Toshack in August, Brian Flynn has been in caretaker charge of Wales. But now, it appears the Welsh FA have identified Toshack's long term replacement.
41-year-old Sheffield United manager, Gary Speed, seems to be the man set to get the job. Having earned 85 caps for his country in a glittering playing career, he would certainly be a popular choice with the fans. Since ending his playing days at Sheffield United, he has carried on at the club as a coach, learning the ropes for the next stage of his career in football. Always a leader on the pitch, Speed became leader off it, getting the manager's job at Bramall Lane in September.
In the past, managers have combined the Wales job with club duties. However, with things not going quite so well at Sheffield United, Speed could well be tempted to take the national role full time. Having been a huge admirer of Gary Speed during his Newcastle playing days, I wish him luck should he take the post. Wales face England twice in 2011, in qualifiers for the European Championships, in 2012.
