The Sad Tale Of Peter Crouch
June 25th 2008 17:40
Poor Peter Crouch is caught in an awful middle ground at Liverpool. Leaving the squad will mean he can probably get more appearances in the starting eleven, but the only real interest has been from Portsmouth, meaning Crouch would be in all likelihood giving up a lot of success. But even if Crouch wants to leave, there is a huge problem in that Liverpool keeps rejecting Pompey’s bids for the England International.
Redknapp’s most recent offer of £9million having been rejected, may have tainted Pompey’s resolve for the English giant. As Redknapp has vowed that he will not break the bank to sign Crouch. With the big man having one more year on his contract, Crouch could be stuck in Liverpool limbo. Given Torres has taken over the starting striker position, and Crouch does not play well on the pitch at the same time as Torres, Liverpool have evolved without Crouch as it seems.
That makes me feel a little bad, as the big man is very useful in a tight situation, and has been a hero for Liverpool on many occasions in the past. But now in many ways it seems as though Crouch’s career as a major star player is pretty well over. With the only major interest coming in from Portsmouth, and them being unwilling to pay the transfer fee. Crouch looks certain to rot on the sidelines next year, and the fewer matches played will only hurt Crouch in his selling points to teams in the next transfer market, when he inevitably looks to leave Anfield.
I understand the glory that is Fernando Torres for Liverpool, but I don’t get how you ignore Crouch’s commitment and production in the Champions League for Liverpool. The man whose coined phrase for the tournament was ’give him a start and he’ll give you a goal’. Now he couldn’t buy a start, and no one is willing to buy a start for him in a different organization.
Peter Crouch is fast becoming the man who was retired by football, rather than a man who will retire from football, and it’s sad in a way.
