As has been evident through the years, to win the English Premier League, you need more than talented players and a great manager. You need to have the knack of winning games, when the going is tough. Today at Old Trafford, that is exactly what we saw from Manchester United. Despite a tough break with injuries in recent times, a depleted Red Devils squad managed to fashion a 2-1 victory against relegation candidates Wolves. The result was harsh on Wolves, who equalised through Ebanks-Blake, after Park Ji Sung had put United ahead. It was Park who again popped up with the winner, in the 94th minute. Alex Ferguson's men always manage to get the three points, and this was another afternoon showing off their champion mentality.
Unfortunately for Tottenham, their hugely talented team seem to be lacking this same grit and determination. In the lunch time kick off, despite dominating the first half, they slumped to a 4-2 defeat at Bolton. Two goals from Kevin Davies and Steinsson's rare strike put the trotters 3-0 up, before goals from Hutton and Pavlyuchecko clawed Spurs back into it. Martin Petrov made the points safe however in injury time.
Brede Hangelaand became my new favourite footballer today, as his last gasp equaliser for Fulham, won me my four match accumulator. His 95th minute goal cancelled out Mark Albrighton's earlier goal, meaning the full time result was Fulham 1-1 Aston Villa. The points were also shared at Birmingham, where the home side battled from 2-0 down to draw 2-2. West Ham must have thought the points were their's after goals from Piquionne and Behrami. But Jerome and Ridgewell salvaged City a point. It was also 2-2 between Blackpool and Everton, Eardley, Vaughan, Coleman and Cahill on the score sheet.
Sunderland put their derby day misery behind them, with a 2-0 victory against Stoke City. With no Darren Bent, record signing Asamoah Gyan was on hand to score both goals. Worryingly, the Potters are continuing their recent slide towards the relegation zone. Blackburn Rovers were also winners today, moving away from the drop zone with three points at home against Wigan Athletic. Pederson and Jason Roberts put them 2-0 up, before N'Zogbia gave the away side hope. This result drops Wigan into the bottom three.
But Manchester United were definitely the big winners of the day, putting the pressure on Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City, ahead of Super Sunday tomorrow!
