Today saw the announcement that former England boss, Sven-Goran Eriksson, was the new manager of Championship side Leicester City. Sven's most recent role saw him two divisions lower, at Notts County, as director of football, but he has said that he is delighted to now be back on the training ground, and in charge. After being in my opinion wrongly dismissed, and treated unfairly at Manchester City, he is desperate to get another crack at managing in the Premier League. Despite taking over a team in the second tier's relegation zone, he feels he can lead them to promotion in the near future.
I can not help but feel, with no disrespect intended towards Leicester City, that this proves another act, in a fall from grace for this Swedish tactician. He has managed some of Europe's top clubs, including Roma, Benfica, Sampdoria, Lazio and Fiorentina, and won numerous trophies in a successful managerial career, which has seen him labelled in the past, as a world class manager. He also has International managerial experience, with Mexico, Ivory Coast (at this summer's World Cup), and of course England. Despite the trials and tribulations of his time at the helm of the England team, he always had a good relationship with fans, and English media. Despite never providing a victory in a major tournament, he lead England to two World Cup quarter finals, and the same stage at the European Championships.
But now, he has signed a two-year contract at Leicester, with chairman Milan Mandaric stating 'this is a day that will be looked back on as a fantastic day, for years to come'. No doubt, Foxes fans will be excited at the appointment of such a big-name, regardless of whether or not he is past his peek. Having come so close to success with England, and had bitter departures from Notts County and Man City, he will be determined to see the job through at Leicester. I have great respect for Eriksson, and wish him every bit of luck at he Walkers Stadium!
