Following being bailed this week for attacking his ex-girlfriend, Newcastle United forward Andy Carroll has been instructed to live with team-mate, and Magpies captain, Kevin Nolan. Manager Chris Hughton joked today that Nolan is 'making his supper, and getting him tucked in for a good night's sleep'. The move into the scouser's home has not stopped the young English striker's progress, being hampered by off the field problems.
Right now, there is no doubt that Andy Carroll, given the famous Black n White number 9 shirt last summer, is the best young prospect at the club. At just 21, he has already hit five Premier League goals this season, and has been muted as a future England player. But his potential is in danger of not being achieved, due to his private life. He already faces GBH charges, after allegedly attacking a man in a club earlier this year. Now these fresh claims, to which he pleaded guilty, bring more unwanted attention to the Gateshead born hitman. Locals have lashed out, by torching his £70,000 land-rover, which was sat on Nolan's drive.
Hopefully while living with Kevin Nolan, an experienced pro, he will learn to concentrate on his football, and keep his head down and nose clean. At the weekend, the two new roomies scored the goals to give Newcastle a vital 2-1 win at West Ham, and hopefully a closer bond between our regular front two, bodes well. Ironically, renowned bad man Joey Barton, has also pledged to help Carroll knuckle down, and shake his bad boy image. Barton, capped once by England, knows what it is like to have a career hampered by a bad reputation, and wants his young team mate to avoid the same fate.
After it also emerged this week, that Carroll's recent exclusion from an England Under 21s squad was due to a fall out with manager Stuart Pearce, he really needs to sort himself out. He has tremendous ability, and could be a fantastic player for Newcastle United. For now, the fans are still behind him. But dragging the club's name through the dirt will not be tolerated. Hopefully this new living arrangement, will see Andy Carroll become known for his football, and avoid the newspapers front pages in future.
