In Rugby League Super League's 2010 Grand Final, it was Wigan who condemned St Helen's to a fourth straight Grand Final disappointment, in a game they dominated throughout. It was Wigan's first triumph for 12 years, and caps a season where they also won the League leaders shield. This result however, ruined the retiring Kieron Cunningham's dreams of having the perfect send off.
This was the third time Wigan had travelled to Old Trafford for a Grand Final appearance, having lost back in 2000 and 2003. But they raced into a 16-0 lead, thanks to two Martin Gleeson tries, and one from Darrell Goulding. Although St Helens did pull a try back just before the break through Andrew Dixon, the game was pretty much over shortly after half time. Sam Tomkins extended the lead to 22-6 early in the second half, and despite a late Meli try for the Saints, it ended in a comfortable 22-10 win for Wigan.
A crowd of 71,526 witnessed the rather one sided final, and St Helen's fans will be devastated to have made a wasted trip for a fourth year in a row. But Wigan fans will celebrate this long awaited success for some time to come, after completing a remarkable season.
