So Far So Boring...The Euro 2008
June 9th 2008 15:37
So far Euro 2008 has been fairly boring, for all intents and purposes. All the matches so far have been incredibly one sided, with one team scoring, and the other chasing for ninety minutes, and never looking like they could get back in the game. I was really looking forward to this tournament also, considering the club season still doesn’t start for another two months. And wow has it ever disappointed.
I half expected some excitement from Portugal, given Cristiano Ronaldo would be playing, and even that was awful. Ronaldo looked shaky for most of the match, and Portugal prevailed in the end more because of Turkey’s inability to defend logically, than brilliance at scoring goals. Perhaps this is a preview of how Ronaldo will fail if he leaves Manchester United for a team that isn’t built around him.
Hopefully the football will get better, with Spain still to come, and today’s “group of death” match-ups with France v. Romania, and Italy v. Netherlands. I’m hoping Netherlands avoid self-destruction for once and play to their strengths, and miraculously finish at the top of this group. And I’d like to see Romania come in second, to give a little shock to the tournament, with both World Cup finalists failing in the first stage of the tournament.
It’s of note that depending upon Spain’s performance Tuesday, I may swap my pick to Germany as the proposed champs, as they looked like the only side strong enough to sustain a winning playing form. But, if Spain doesn’t self destruct like usual, they have the talent to beat anyone. Just like the Netherlands squad, all the talent in the world, if they could only get along and play as a team.
