Today saw 23-year-old German driver Sebastien Vettel, lift the Drivers World Championship Trophy for Red Bull, after winning the season's final race in Abu Dhabi. He becomes the youngest ever World Champion, meaning it is a double victory in 2010 for Red Bull, after winning the Constructors Championship last weekend in Brazil. Vettel started the weekend in third place in the standings, but after qualifying on pole position, it was a straight fight between him and Fernando Alonso, as the only two remaining realistic contenders.
Alonso knew that if Vettel won the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, he'd only need a top five finish to secure his third world championship. But after starting in 3rd, he was leapfrogged by Jenson Button off the start line. After a serious crash involving Michael Schumacher and Liuzzi meant the safety was employed on the first lap, huge tactical decisions occured. Renault got the decisions right, bringing in their drivers to change tyres under the safety car. Ultimately, it was this decision by Renault, which won Vettel the title.
Alonso and Vettel's team-mate Mark Webber, spent the rest of the race frustrated, stuck down in 7th and 8th place, where they eventually finished. Renault drivers Kubica and Petrov, benefited from the pit stop advantage to finish impressive 5th and 6th. With Rosberg 4th, McLaren pair Button and Hamilton made up the podium, in 3rd and 2nd respectively. While second was a good finish for Hamilton, Vettel's victory also saw his faint title hopes disappear. But after Alonso failed to finish in the top 5, there was only one man that the focus was on. In my opinion, the best driver has won the 2010 Championship. Sebastien Vettel won't forget this day for the rest of his life!
