Ronaldo And Blatter Disgust
July 11th 2008 18:02
Have I gone absolutely mad, or do I read correctly that not only Sepp Blatter’s comments comparing footballers to slaves in the transfer market were mental, but now Ronaldo agrees with him? I didn’t realize being paid a huge some of money, to play football for a living, was such an awful thing. Especially when you’re playing at one of the biggest clubs in the world, and winning a whole slew of trophies. How awful for Ronaldo.
Basically in life to this point, he sort of gets everything he wants professionally, and now this one circumstance, his supposed interest in playing for Real Madrid, he’s calling himself a slave? Ronaldo made a professional legal agreement through written contract, that he would commit himself to the Manchester United campaign until 2012, did he not? So why now, just because he throws a fit and decides he wants to leave at this moment, should Ronaldo be allowed to forget contracted obligations. Why should he be held to a higher standard, just because Ronaldo decides one day, that he wants to play in Spain?

Better yet, how does any of this make him a slave? Football salaries have been spiraling out of control, and will continue to do so, giving Ronaldo exactly what to complain about? He’s set to become one of the top earners in the history of football, so again, how is he a slave?
Forcing footballers to adhere to legal documents is slavery now? That’s why teams have contracts, otherwise everyone could walk out on a club when things were looking down. Instead of committing to a campaign, and taking United back to the top as Ronaldo has done over the past few years.
And yes he’s done United a great service, and United supporters should applaud that even if he leaves this summer. But I’m still confused as to the slave reference. Ronaldo is living his dream, and being paid incredibly well to do so, what part of it is slavery?
That’s all okay though, because Ronaldo is facing being off the pitch for the next three months after having had ankle surgery. Which will give United ample time to remind everyone concerned, that Man U is not a one man team. And that Manchester United will succeed with or without Ronaldo.
(Ronaldo dives some more.)
So have fun going to a club like Real Madrid, where if you have one bad performance, they crap on you for the rest of your contract. Talk to David Beckham about the “respect” he received in his final seasons, despite single handedly earning them the league in his last season. Talk to Robinho, about the way Real Madrid has been “respecting” him lately, despite his amazing talent, and also the way he can single handedly win Madrid matches.
So go to Spain Ronaldo, with a manager that doesn’t want to make you the best and develop your talent. And have fun.
(one last Ronaldo dive)
As a reminder of why Ronaldo should never be a United legend regardless of his ability, here are a few examples of modern United legends: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, and to some degree David Beckham. Because they served the club, and did what’s best for the team, despite any selfish desires they might have had.
Beckham’s leave wasn’t his decision, but rather a vengeful Ferguson, I’d just like to point that out.
