Ronaldinho's Career In The Graveyard?
June 18th 2008 15:37
Ronaldinho, furthering the proof that his career is utterly over for the most part, is finally receiving legitimate competition from someone other than Manchester City, to sign the Brazilian. The unlikely competition? MLS, America’s Major League Soccer organization, supposedly putting up £20million in transfer fees, and who knows how much they’ll have to offer through sponsorships and under the table payments, to avoid MLS’s salary cap. Which I might add, is idiotic to have a salary cap in a league, if you want world football recognition you have to be able to get the worlds best.
The world’s best aren’t going to come to America for $16,000, especially now that the dollar is being stomped on in the currency exchange. Supposedly Ronaldinho would go to Galaxy with Beckham, but if MLS is going to just keep going around the rules to try and sign big name players, why don’t they just eliminate the salary cap. Anyway, having a $2million salary cap in the first place is ridiculous, because that wouldn’t buy you one good player, let alone enough to round out a roster.
But how comedic would it be, if Ronaldinho hurt his career so badly by turning prima donna last season with Barcelona, that he’ll be sent to MLS. He could go from playing with the best players in the world, against the best clubs in the world, in the best league in the world with the Champions League, for MLS. And the LA Galaxy at that, a team that can sell thousands of Beckham shirts, but can’t win championships. Maybe MLS should bend the rules to bring the Galaxy a decent defender, if they can win games they might start becoming valid to the rest of the world.
Bottom line, you can’t compete with the best teams in the world on two million dollars. Ronaldinho will be committing career suicide if he accepts the offer. Even if he’s paid less, hopefully he can realize the better move is to go to Manchester City, because with Mark Hughes as manager and the squad they are preparing, at least he would still be relevant.
Ronaldinho can do more damage and prove he is still one of the best by playing for City, and at least people will be watching him. As the Premiership has the highest ratings of any league in the world. Unlike MLS, where he’ll go to basically rot like David Beckham has, and Ronaldinho isn’t old enough for that. MLS I foresee as becoming the graveyard for players too old to compete in the big three of EPL, La Liga, and Serie A, and Ronaldinho just isn’t old enough for his career to die yet.
