Following on from my post a few days ago, Really Long Link today saw the announcement that Rio Ferdinand would be captaining the England side, to face Montenegro tomorrow night. It is the eleventh match since Rio was named skipper by Capello, but only the third time he has been there to lead the three lions out. The decision comes after much speculation, that stand in captain Steven Gerrard would retain the armband, but the manager has reinstated his first choice to the role, insisting Ferdinand is now, finally, 100% fit.
While I feel Gerrard would have probably been the better option, it isn't really of great importance, as both men will be leaders for their country, on and off the pitch, no matter what. What I am a little confused by, is once again how Fabio Capello works. If it was always his intention to retain Rio Ferdinand as England captain, why not come out when the squad was announced and say so. Instead, like the goalkeeper siltation at the World Cup, he has let speculation and suspense build. The way he makes decisions, is at times like he is trying to attract attention. Capello is a clever man, so maybe he is? But let's hope Rio is a wise choice as captain, and tomorrow night brings a good result!
