Reader Question

July 4th 2008 04:34

Normally, here I'd be posting some expert insight into some random happening of the footy world that caught my eye and may catch yours. But I just wanted to make a quick post to pose a question to anyone that wishes to answer. Who is your favorite player in the modern game? Think about it, really really think, don't go for an easy answer like Ronaldo, or Torres, or David Bekcham necessarily, although those are perfect examples.

But who is your absolute favorite story that keeps you coming back for more, a player that executes something that you enjoy in the game to the perfect extent dazzling your eyes every time they're out on the pitch.

For example, though I try to appear unbiased in my opinions on the news and events of football for the sake of maintaining a level of professionalism, and to prevent the blog from getting bogged down in senseless support of a team you may not care about. But I'll admit this once that since my birth I've been a Manchester United supporter. And that my complete favorite player to watch isn't Cristiano Ronaldo, or Wayne Rooney, or Carlos Tevez, but rather the oft overlooked to some extent, Michael Carrick.

Playing more of a silently heroic role for the club, as a holding mid-fielder his passing is second to none when it comes to a good long range ball. Not to mention crossing. Not to mention the brilliance he can show the few times he comes forward to attack. Carrick only comes forward if he has a great chance to score, and in that sense he plays the position brilliantly.

Look at the successful run United had last year, and one of the biggest people to congratulate is Carrick, because Ferguson started him to be the defensive savior of mid-field, in every major contest of the season. Even over the brilliant Hargreaves on many occasions.

So using that example, I'd love to hear back on what player motivates you to keep coming back to the modern game most. Which player do you look the most to for brilliance on the pitch?

Well for me there can be only one choice... Henrik Larsson. As a Celtic fan I watched him play week in week out at Parkhead and I've never saw anyone like him before or since. He was bought for a measly £650k in the season where Celtic had to stop city rivals Rangers winning a record breaking 10 league championships in a row, and his debut saw him gift a goal to Hibs, meaning a disastrous start for the campaign. He even scored an own goal in his first European game, yet ever since then he was magnificent, helping Celtic win the league (overall 4 league titles and 4 domestic cups). In his third season he suffered a horrific leg break in a European tie with Lyon and in his comeback season he won the European Golden Boot with 35 goals (53 in all competitions). He scored 2 goals in the UEFA cup final against Porto (who went on to win the champions league the next season), and his final goal tally for Celtic was 173 goals in 221 games. His time at Barcelona was also distinguished, making both goals in their 2-1 champions league final against Arsenal and winning 2 league titles. He is the top scorer in Europe for any British team, has played at more International competitions than any one else (scoring at all but 1), and still plays today just shy of his 37th birthday. Easy to see why we Celtic fans call him "The King of Kings"

Two players come to mind for me: Ryan Giggs and Cesc Fabregas. I like Giggs not only for his speed (in his younger days) and skills but also for his loyalty to United. As for Fabregas, I just love his vision. His passing is just amazing for a player his age.
