With 18 of the English Premier League clubs having played already this weekend, there have been a host of games decided by late, late goals! There were also two derby's on Sunday to provide entertainment, in another exciting weekend of action. There is still one game to come tonight, between Blackpool and West Brom. But here's a summary of the games from Saturday and yesterday.
The shock result award for the weekend goes to Mick McCarthey's Wolves side, who managed to upset the odds against big spending Manchester City at Molinuex. Wolves have been in free fall in recent weeks, picking up just one point since August. But they will be hoping this fantastic 2-1 win will kick start their season, but remain 19th despite the three points. Emmanuel Adebayor put title chasing City in front, only for goals from Milijas and Edwards to turn it around. Following defeat to Arsenal last week, this will come as a hammer blow for Man City, adding to reported off the field problems. All of this is bound to pile the pressure on the manager.
The other title contenders took full advantage of Mancini's mens slip up. Champions Chelsea came from behind to win 2-1 at Blackburn. Anelka cancelled out Benjani's first Rovers goal, before Ivanovic bagged an 85th minute winner for Chelsea. Manchester United beat Tottenham 2-0 at Old Trafford, captain Nemanja Vidic heading them into a 1-0 half time lead. Nani then scored the strangest goal I have ever seen in the second half. Nani went down in the box claiming a penalty, putting his hands on the ball in protest. The referee was not interested in his appeal, and Spurs keeper Gomez picked the ball up to take a free kick. As he stepped away from the ball for a run up, Nani simply kicked it into the net. While Tottenham should have had a free kick, the referee never stopped play and the goal stood. It has to be seen to be believed.
While it impossible to argue Arsenal were at their best on Saturday, they did manage to get a 1-0 win against rivals West Ham. It is often said that the mark of Champions, is grinding out victories on your bad days. Holding midfielder Alex Song managed to bag the 88th minute winner for the Gunners, keeping them in 2nd place, five points behind leaders Chelsea.
Everton's recovery from their poor start to the season continued, with a 1-0 victory against Stoke, thanks to a Yakubu goal. Fulham also picked up three points in front of their home fans, a Clint Dempsey double earning a 2-0 win against Wigan. Sunday brought a mouth watering line up of three more Premier League games. Unfortunately however, the Midlands derby between Aston Villa and Birmingham City didn't really meet expectations. A typically fiesty affair finished goalless.
Liverpool made it two wins in a row for the first time under Roy Hodgson in the Premier League, but left it late. An 86th minute winner from Argentinian winger Maxi Rodriguez, gave them a 1-0 win at Bolton Wanderers. Newcastle United were the big winners of the weekend though, thrashing local rivals Sunderland 5-1. For a more detailed review of this in particular match, you can check out another of my posts .... So Blackpool face West Brom tonight, with the home side knowing a win could move them from 16th to 9th place. But incredibly, 6th place West Brom could leap frog Tottenham and Man City with a win, and move into the fourth Champions League slot. That game kicks off at 8pm tonight.
