Now that we have entered December, this is the time when a lot of Premier League managers will be sweating over some players contracts. This is because from December 30th, any players in the English leagues can speak to clubs abroad about a summer free transfer. If the contract is not extended by June, the player is then free to speak to English clubs. Looking down the list of Premier League players with expiring contracts, there are sure to plenty of clubs on alert.
There are a few players on the list who are sure to get new deals. Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes at Manchester United will play for the club as long as they want too, and if they don't intend on retiring at the end of this season, will surely sign again. But there are a couple of players at United who aren't so sure of a stay beyond July.
Michael Owen and Owen Hargreaves have both been plagued by injuries, and at 30 and 29 years old, may not get an extended stay at Old Trafford. If he proves his fitness, I'm confident Hargreaves will get a new deal, but Michael Owen's days at the club could well be numbered.
Other players struggling recently with injuries with expiring deals, include Jonathan Woodgate, Matthew Upson, Jose Bosingwa and John Carew. I'm sure if they find full fitness, there clubs would want them to stay.
There are a few players though, whose contract situations will be intriguing top clubs. Everton duo Anichebe and Steven Piennar, would be welcome at most Premier League teams. Steven Taylor still has a huge future, and the Newcastle centre back will be interesting a lot of managers. Elmander at Bolton, Onuoha at Man City, Gera at Fulham, Green at West Ham, Larsson at Birmingham and Eboue & Manuel Almunia at Arsenal all still have contract issues to straighten out.
Finally, there are a few older players who only joined Premier League sides on one-year deals, so will be wondering if a second year deal is on the horizon. These include William Gallas at Spurs, Benjani at Blackburn, and Patrick Vieira at Man City.
There are certainly enough players on this list to interest a host of Premier League managers. Especially seen as they will all cost nothing besides their signing on fees (and probably a big fee to the agents too). It will be interesting to see how many of these players sort out new deals at their current clubs, and how many move on.
