Porto Banned From Champions League
June 4th 2008 18:36
Of the 32 teams that make up the Champions League group stages for the 08/09 tournament, FC Porto will not be one of them. Porto have been banned from the tournament following the clubs conviction of bribery charges in the 03/04 season. Reportedly Porto attempted to bribe UEFA officials on three separate occasions during Porto’s home contests.
Good riddance if you’re attempting to bribe officials in such a prestigious tournament. The Champions League is about the best club winning, not the craftiest club bribing their way to victory. Ban them for life, for such audacity, and spitting in the face of FIFA’s fair-play standards completely.
At least UEFA officials are hailed for their ability to avoid such treachery.
FC Porto is expected to appeal the decision.
