Pele Tells Rooney To Refocus
July 21st 2008 14:47
Former superstar, and considered by most to be the greatest footballer to have ever played the game, Pele has told Wayne Rooney to calm down. Although I would dispute the greatest player opinion as even Pele has said the George Best was the greatest, here Pele is also correct. Wayne Rooney hasn't been up to form the last few years, and a large part of that is because of the England International's aggression.
Given the state of Rooney's performances this year, before the season has even begun, something desperately needs to be done. As Rooney took a stupid kick at Kaizer Chief's captain Jimmy Tau, during Manchester United's first match in their pre-season campaign in South Africa. Causing the striker to be booked, and then later substituted by Sir Alex Ferguson, and that's only in pre-season.
Pele has been quoted saying, in the Daily Star, as advice to the United striker 'When he is tangling with opponents, Rooney has to learn how to defend himself – not attack the opponent.'
To which Pele has a point, Wayne Rooney is famous for having a high work rate, as well as passion for his team. But that energy unfocused is what's killing his skill in recent years. Instead of concentrating that output into scoring or setting up a goal, Rooney is wasting it on backtracking after a mid-fielder on the ball until he inevitable fouls him.
That's the issue, Rooney needs to reinvigorate his nose for goal. He's a striker not a mid, Rooney needs to play forward and focus on scoring and getting in the best position to score. Don't waste the great passes Carrick can whip out from distance, by not being available up front.
