One Bell of a deal!

August 20th 2010 16:46
This week brought the hugely dramatic, and shocking news that Craig Bellamy, 31, had returned home to Wales, in a season long loan move to Cardiff City. Being a Newcastle United fan, I know all about the downsides of having Bellamy at your club, for example his attitude towards staff and fellow players, but any fan of English football know all about his qualities. These qualities would ensure that the Wales captain could have played in the Champions League this season should he have chosen to join Tottenham, but instead, he'll be in the Championship, English footballs 2nd tier.

Bellamy is quick, a great finisher, strong for his size, and knows his position inside out. Not an out and out striker, he thrives off playing between midfield and attack, but with little intention to be in his own half. Last season at Manchester City he proved he is one of the best players in the country, and his display at Old Trafford in the Manchester derby, was one of the performances of the season. He is a victim of the 25 player rule new to the Premier League this season, as big spending Manchester City have had to loan him out to trim their numbers.

He is the type of player everyone loves to hate, unless he plays for your club, then you love him. Bellamy was my favourite player during his time at Newcastle, and I was gutted to see him leave after a fall out with then manager Graeme Souness. He scored 28 goals in 93 games for the Magpies, and was just developing into a top class player, at the age of, 25 when we offloaded him on the cheap to Blackburn Rovers. After impressing in his only season at Ewood Park, he was snapped up by Liverpool

Ever since this point, Bellamy's career seems to have followed a distinct pattern. Signing for a big club, then his face doesn't fit, and moves on to a mid-table premier league side. Everyone is then reminded of his qualities, and he returns to a big club, only for the cycle to repeat again. After failing to cement a place at Liverpool, the fiesty Welsh star moved to West Ham, before his £14 million move to Eastlands 18 monthes ago. This move down to the next division is a huge new step in his career though, and it will be interesting to see how he goes.

In theory, Craig Bellamy is too good for the Championship, and should rip it apart! However, there are some very solid teams in the league, and I know from Newcastle's experiences last season, not many players are willing to give flair players chance to shine. Also, Cardiff City fans must keep in mind that one player does not make a team. But given that the bluebirds reached the play-off final last season, and have now made possibly the best signing in the league's history, they could well challenge for promotion, and Bellamy has promised to bring Premier League football to Wales for the first time.

As if the signing wasn't good enough, Manchester City are paying almost all of the player's wage. This is an incredible coup for a club who recently just escaped a winding up order for their level of debt. Though it may have infuriated other manager's in the league, Cardiff fans have reason to be excited by their new recruit. So many shirts were sold, that the club shop ran out of Y's and 9's, (his shirt number for the season is 39), and some fans got Bellam, 3, on the back of their shirts. Exciting times could now lie ahead for the Welsh club, but what a signing!!
