While I don't normally report on the second tier of English football, the N-power Championship, tonight has been an incredible night of action! 40 goals were scored in all, even though the top two both drew 0-0! The best entertainment was definitely to be found at Elland Road, as Leeds United took on Preston North End.
The Yorkshire side looked comfortable after two goals from Somma, and one each for Becchio and Bruce put them 4-1 in front, after Parkin had put the away side ahead early. Parkin scored his second just before half time, just to give Preston a half chance of getting back into the game. Second half goals from Treacy, Davidson and Hume, and Parkin completing his hat-trick, completed an unbelievable turn around, as Preston won 6-4!
This wasn't the only high scoring game tonight. Swansea won 3-2 away against in form Watford, Burnley beat Hull City 4-0, and Norwich City moved up to third, after a 4-3 victory over struggling Leicester City, who now lay in last place. The fast improving Reading, picked up an impressive 1-0 win at home against promotion candidates Ipswich Town. Derby County beat Middlesborough 3-1, increasing the pressure on Borough manager Gordon Strachan. Coventry City leap-frogged Doncaster into the top half, after beating them 2-1, as Marlon King limped out of his first start since his prison term.
The fast improving Portsmouth continued their recent good form, beating Bristol City 3-1. Despite all of these entertaining, high scoring games, it was the top teams in the division who struggled to impress. QPR were held 0-0 at home by Millwall, while second placed Cardiff City finished the same score-line at home against Crystal Palace. There were also dull draws between Scunthorpe and Barnsley, and between Nottingham Forest and Sheffield United. But it was an otherwise fantastic night, and a great advert for the Championship!
