Newcastle United 5-1 Sunderland

November 1st 2010 13:13
Kevin Nolan Derby hat-trick

Yesterday will live long in the memory, for all Newcastle United fans. Against our bitter local rivals Sunderland, the full time result at St James' Park was 5-1! The Mackems hadn't been conceding many goals this season, but the Magpies found it easy enough to carve open their opponents defence time and time again. As if the win wasn't enough, the red card received by former Newcastle defender Titus Bramble, was the icing on the most delicious of cakes.

After a typically tense opening, given how much the game meant to both sets of fans, Newcastle began to turn up the heat about 20 minutes in. Two fantastically taken goals, in the space of 10 minutes, from Kevin Nolan put the home side in a strong position. The real killer though, was when Jonas won a penalty deep into first half stoppage time. Giving no sentiment to Nolan grabbing his hat trick, the professional Mags stuck with regularly penalty taker Shola Ameobi. His perfectly dispatched spot kick proved that was the right decision. 3-0 at half time.

Bramble's red card was the nail in Sunderland's coffin, before Ameobi brilliantly finished for his second, after the impressive Andy Carroll had headed against the crossbar. Kevin Nolan did complete his hat trick to make it 5-0, making it surely the best day in the skipper's career. That third goal also made midfielder Nolan, the joint top scorer in the Premier League, on 7 for the season. Darren Bent did manage a late consolation goal for the Black cats, but it was barely celebrated.

After relegation for Newcastle two seasons ago left all Sunderland fans claiming they were now the North-East's Premier club, this result would have gone a long way to curing Toon fans wounds. The result leaves Newcastle in 7th place, with Sunderland slipping to 11th.

really can't believe this, can't win at home all season but can win 5-1 v sunderland and 6-0 against Villa. Obviously don't believe in a 1-0 home win!
