Martin Jol leaves Ajax; Set for Toon?

December 7th 2010 17:28
Martin Jol has left Ajax

Just hours after Chris Hughton was disgracefully sacked as Newcastle United manager, the media and bookies went into overdrive, predicting who the next manager would be. Alan Pardew seemed the early favourite, with Alan Curbishley and Martin O'Neill also linked to the post. But last night, developments at another club, meant there was a new favourite for the job.

In the Summer, former Tottenham boss Martin Jol agreed personal terms to take over at Fulham, before Mark Hughes eventually took over. His club, Ajax, blocked the move, refusing to let the Dutchman go. Last night, after a recent down turn in form, Martin Jol left Ajax via 'mutual consent'. Is the timing of his departure just coincidence, or is a move back to England now imminent for Jol?

Jol was quoted as saying; 'With pain in my heart I say goodbye to this wonderful club'. He lead Spurs to consecutive 5th placed finishes in the Premier League, before steering Hamburg to the Champions League, a feet he repeated at Ajax last term.

Right now, I am still far too bitter about Hughton's removal by Ashley, to seriously think any other man taking the job is a good idea. But given that the initial names in the frame were Pardew and Curbishley, Jol would be a much better option than them. At least he has a proven pedigree in the Premier League, so maybe could help take us to the next level. Given what has transpired over recent days, who knows what will happen next at Newcastle United, it will be interesting to see.

Martin Jol is a great manager. I would put him about par with Hughton in terms of skill level. It is always tough to see a good coach go, even if there is somebody as good to take his place. As I always say, "Never fire a coach unless if there is a very, very good reason as to why you would do such a move." That saying goes even if Mourinho was on the market. You just don't fire people.

Don't know much about Jol but from your article he should be a good fit. I still believe Hughton should be the Manager still
