This weekend saw some incredible, and shocking results in the English Premier League. The top three sides picked up just one point between them, and just one team who started the weekend in the top 6, won! After Mancini's comments on friday that Chelsea would easily win the title, this was the weekend his Manchester City team, entered the race.
The early kick off from Eastlands, saw Man City end Chelsea's 100% start to the league season, with a 1-0 victory, thanks to Carlos Tevez's goal. With Balotelli injured, Mancini seems happy to make his side compact, and hard to beat, while relying on Tevez to score the goals. So far, it is working. Chelsea may feel hard done too in defeat, but truly were never at their best. The result see's City move to within 4 points of the champions, and retain 4th place.
Luckily for Chelsea however, Arsenal and Manchester United failed to capitalise on their slip up. At the Emirates on Saturday, West Brom came, and picked up a sensational victory. As the Baggies had already gone down 6-0 at Chelsea this season, and Arsenal had put six past Braga and Blackpool at home, I fancied this would be a rout. And to be fair, it almost was, as West Brom lead 3-0 with twenty minutes left, thanks to second half goals from Odemwingie, Jara and Thomas. This was also after Brunt had missed a penalty for the away team. Nasri scored two late goals for the Gunners, but West Brom held on for a deserved, and magnificent 3 points.
Tottenham also slipped up saturday afternoon, losing 1-0 at local rivals West Ham, Piquionne scoring for the second game in a row. Blackburn got a hard fought 2-1 win at Blackpool, while Fulham remained unbeaten, a goalless draw with Everton, making it one win and five draws, meanwhile Everton go bottom of the table. A dull encounter at St Andrews also finished 0-0 between Birmingham and Wigan, while Liverpool and Sunderland played out an entertaining 2-2 draw. Dirk Kuyt's goal to make it 1-0, was the most bizarre goal I have ever seen, following Bent's beach ball goal in the same fixture last season. But Darren Bent scored twice to put the travellers ahead, before Gerrard rescued a point for the Reds.
Sunday saw Aston Villa battle for a 2-1 victory at Wolves, as a seemingly rejuvenated Emile Heskey scored a late winner. Newcastle United threw away a 1-0 half time lead, to lose 2-1 at home against Stoke City, who reverted to long ball football, after bringing on Rory Delap early in the second half, to score two ugly goals. And finally, Manchester United failed to close the gap on Chelsea to one point, as they twice had to come from behind to draw 2-2 at Bolton. Following his two goals in mid week, it was Michael Owen once again on target, saving Fergie's men from defeat.
Here are this weekend's results in full;
