Liverpool Having Some Trouble

Liverpool, after having their bid for Aston Villa’s Gareth Barry rejected, look to be in a bit of transfer trouble with their targets becoming less acquirable with every passing moment. Martin O’Neill has said that Aston Villa won’t sell Barry for less than £18million, which could prove troublesome for Liverpool with their previous transfer debts still looming.
Rafa Benitez’s other big prospect in attempting to acquire Robbie Keane from Tottenham also probably won’t go through. As Liverpool’s best offer for Tottenham to abandon their most valuable player, is a swap for the not always so reliable Peter Crouch. No chance Benitez on that one, absolutely no chance.
Plus, why is Benitez looking at a striker, when Liverpool have the brilliant Fernando Torres? Robbie Keane is not a sit on the bench kind of guy, and Torres is most useful in a lone striker role. So you risk making both players useless to your cause, as Torres with not produce like Liverpool would want if he becomes part of a striker team. Then you have Keane, who isn’t keen on sitting in the stands waiting for Torres to get tired.
Why not strengthen your mid-field a bit more? The Torres supporting five, weed out the less than successful mid-fielders. Like Babel, who is much too selfish any time he gets the ball, you don’t need a player that will drive the ball all the way to the penalty area, only to take an awful shot on instead of passing to his wide-open teammate. Plus who’s going to replace Xabi Alonso? Barry won’t because you likely can’t afford him. £18million is a lot to ask when you’re having trouble with the club owners, and are already a couple hundred million pounds in debt.
Plus selling Alonso won’t fund a Barry transfer, because you’re only going to get £8-9million for the Spaniard.
But if you forget a stupid transfer concept for Keane, and sell crouch to any team that will take him for a good £10million, boom you have Barry money. Although I still don’t think Gareth Barry is the hero Liverpool are chasing him as. I think someone like David Bentley would be better suited to Liverpool’s needs. But the lackluster manager Benitez is the decision maker. So we just have to wait and see how he blunders Liverpool away from success next season.
The person I really feel bad for here is captain fantastic Steven Gerrard. The poor guy can’t buy another title with Benitez at the helm. His only hope is to jump ship, which he’d never do, or hope Benitez will be fired, making way for a good manager. One who understands the importance of not constantly shifting a squad, and letting the players develop a rhythm.
