Last night Newcastle United were eliminated from the League Cup, after a 4-0 home defeat against Arsenal. While the Londoners were worthy of the victory, the scoreline was without doubt, an exaggeration of their dominance. Given that on my drive to Newcastle, I was 79 miles away in my car an hour before kick off, I did well to only miss the first ten minutes, by which point I've learned the Mags could have already been a couple behind.
Hughton made nine changes from the weekend, backing up his point that the priority this season is staying in the Premier League. Fringe players like Lovenkrands, Smith, Guthrie and Ryan Taylor, were joined by youngsters Haris Vukcic, Tamas Kadar and Nile Ranger in the starting line-up. Wenger fielded another strong team in the competition, showing his ambition to win every trophy this season. Rosicky, Walcott, Bendnter, Clichy and Denilson started, with Fabregas and Sagna later appearing. Given the line-ups, Newcastle gave it a good go, matching the Gunners for the whole of the first half. Arsenal only took the lead through a Tim Krul own goal on the stroke of half time.
Theo Walcott's blistering pace troubled throughout, and he latched onto a header through early in the second half to double the lead, which lead to Newcastle taking chances, and throwing men forward. The majority of the second half was the Toon trying to score, but impressive young Arsenal keeper, Szczesny kept them at bay. In the last ten minutes, Bendnter and Walcott got through on the break to score, making the full time result 4-0. Despite the defeat, there were positives for Newcastle. Most of the first team were rested, ahead of the Tyne-Wear derby on Sunday. Also, Vuckic inparticular looked very at home in the midfield.
