Tonight brings the first two Quarter-Finals of the League Cup, with two more to come tomorrow night. With so many big names already eliminated from the competition, this evening's games see the two favourites in action.
Arsenal host Wigan Athletic, aiming to get a step closer to a first trophy in five years. While the Carling Cup is often seen as a minor competition by the Premier League's high flyers, Arsene Wenger knows that winning a trophy, whatever one it is, has to be a priority this season. It will be interesting to see how strong of a side the Gunners field, but the likes of Van Persie, Walcott and Bendtner, all still finding match fitness after injuries, are likely to feature. For struggling Wigan, the cup should provide a useful distraction to the league. They have nothing to lose, and if they could cause a shock, they could be set for a return to Wembley, having made the final in 2007.
Manchester United won the League Cup last season, and despite fielding an inexperienced side in each round so far, have reached this stage with relative ease. They travel to Upton Park tonight to face West Ham, who will be boosted by that victory over Wigan at the weekend. United will be favourites, but with home support and against a weakened side, the Hammers may have a chance.
Arsenal and Manchester United are obvious favourites to make the semi-finals from these two fixtures, but given the unpredictability in English football so far this season, there are certainly no guarantees.
