Today saw matches from each end of the spectrum in the Premier League, with four of the day's matches providing 17 goals, but with the other four only producing the one. It was definitely a day when some matches were a lot more worth watching than others!
Certainly one match that was worth watching, was the lunch time kick off between Aston Villa and Manchester United. Well, the second half at least. A dull first 45 minutes was pretty uneventful, not surprisingly goalless at the break. But the home side looked to have wrapped up their first home win against United in fifteen years, through second half goals from Albrighton and Ashley Young. But with just 9 minutes remaining, substitute Federico Macheda gave the unbeaten Red Devils hope. Then, with just minutes left, skipper Nemanja Vidic scored a hugely vital goal, ensuring that an even game ended in a 2-2 draw.
But to get the less entertaining matches out of the way, there were three goalless draws in the Premier League today. West Ham continue to struggle, being held at home by Blackpool. After the shocking derby draw in midweek, Manchester City failed to improve, drawing at home against Birmingham City. And despite dominating much of the game, Newcastle United fired a blank against Fulham, who were inspired by goalkeeper Schwarzer's wonderful performance. Wigan Athletic picked up a big 3 points, beating West Brom 1-0. Sub Victor Moses really made a difference after coming on for the home side, and scored the only goal of the afternoon at the DW Stadium.
As I said in my preview of today's action, Tottenham needed a win at home to Blackburn today, after four Premier League's games without victory. They were back to their best, racing into a 4-0 lead, through two Gareth Bale goals, and one each for Crouch and Pavlyuchencko. It could have been even more, with the Russian striker missing a penalty. Despite not scoring in a home game for the first time for his new club, Rafael Van der Vaart was once again, at the heart of most good things Spurs did. Disappointingly for Harry Redknapp, Rovers grabbed two late consolation goals, through Givet and Nelson, but it finished 4-2.
Bolton were impressive once again, moving into a 3-0 lead at Wolves. A Stearman own goal after 50 seconds broke the deadlock, before goals from Elmander and Holden seemed to wrap the points up. But Wolves fought back, and goals from Foley and Fletcher, almost grabbed them a point, but the away side held on for a 3-2 win. The final match of the day, saw Liverpool's recent good form end, 2-0 at Stoke City. The scorers were City strikers Kenwyne Jones and Ricardo Fuller, and a late red card for Lucas Leiva, only added to Liverpool's woes.
Tomorrow brings two more Premier League games, with Everton taking on Arsenal, who could move back to second. Then Champions and league leaders Chelsea, face Sunderland at Stamford Bridge. After United's draw at Villa Park today, Chelsea could move six points clear of their main Title rivals with victory.
