After the elation of winning the second Ashes test in Adelaide, today there was some bad news for English cricket fans. Seam bowler Stuart Broad has picked up an abdominal injury, which will keep him out for the rest of the series. Luckily, England have plenty of possible replacements on tour with them, including Tim Bresnan, Ajmal Shazhad and Chris Tremlett.
Broad has bowled well in the first two tests, without necessarily getting the return his efforts deserved. In England's success in the last couple of years, Broad's opening bowling partnership with James Anderson, has been instrumental. His destructive bowling spell in the fifth and decisive Ashes test in England last summer, also swung that series his side's way, making him a national hero.
His batting has also helped make him a crucial part of the England side. Son of former England opening batsmen Chris Broad, Broad junior currently bats at eight. A century against Pakistan showed his growing maturity in that part of his game, and is expected to eventually become a genuine International all rounder.
England have started this series fantastically well, batting, bowling and fielding excellently. This injury is sure to rock them, but they have to move on quickly. More pressure will now fall upon Steven Finn, to really step up, and be our main seamer along with Anderson. As for Broad's replacement, we will have to wait and see who gets the nod, but I wish Broad a speedy recovery. Hopefully he should be fit for next year's World Cup.
