Today's football up and down every single league in England, saw a brilliant statistic emerge ... 86 teams in action, and not one 0-0 draw. The Premier League itself produced 23 goals from just seven matches, on a hugely entertaining Saturday.
The lunch time kick off certainly set the tone for the day at the Emirates, as Arsenal took on Tottenham in the North London derby. With a chance to go top with three points, the Gunners were in top form in the first half. going in at the break with a 2-0 lead. They really hit the ground running, with Samir Nasri putting the home side ahead after just 9 minutes, following a mistake from Gomes. But the midfielders in red provided a masterclass, with Fabregas, Nasri and Arshavin's movement a joy to behold. It was the Russian who laid on the second goal for striker Chamakh.
But talk about a turn around at the break. Reminiscent of the San Siro recovery of a few weeks ago, Gareth Bale scored a goal to spark a Spurs revival. The difference from the 4-3 loss at Inter though was, this time they completed the comeback. Rafael Van der Vaart fired home a penalty to level things up, before defender Younes Kaboul headed home a winner five minutes from time. This was Tottenham's first win at Arsenal in 37 years, and a big statement from Redknapp's boys, are they genuine title contenders?
Well, given that every team at the top seem to be dropping points, maybe. Chelsea made it three losses in four games, as they went down 1-0 at Birmingham City. To be fair, the Champions played really well, but found England goalkeeper Ben Foster in unbeatable form. Having failed to really impress on International duty in midweek, Foster was incredible, making save after save to deny Chelsea, who finished the match with five forwards on the pitch. Lee Bowyer's goal was ultimately enough for the win.
Manchester United took the chance to join Chelsea on 28 points at the top, beating Wigan 2-0. Continuing the pattern of United's season, they were unimpressive, but did enough to get the points. Wigan finished the game with 9 men, but can be proud of their efforts, after dominating the whole first 45 minutes. But a first goal in four years from Patrice Evra broke the deadlock before half time. Substitute Javier Hernandez outshone the return of Wayne Rooney, by scoring the second.
The Premier League's in form side Bolton Wanderers, put in a fantastic performance to beat Newcastle United 5-1 at the Reebok Stadium. Given the amount of points being dropped by the supposed 'Big teams', Bolton now sit fourth, just six points off top. Two goals each from Kevin Davies and the rejuvenated Elmander, and one for Lee, gave Owen Coyle's men their biggest ever win against Newcastle. The Magpies scored a consolation goal through Andy Carroll, his eighth of the season.
Wolves and West Ham are now in big trouble, as both are now cut off five points from safety. The Hammers were beaten by Liverpool, who gave arguably their best performance this season so far. Glen Johnson, Kuyt and Maxi were on hand to give the Reds a 3-0 win. Wolves were beaten 2-1 at Blackpool, despite a spirited second half fight back. Kevin Doyle scored his first goal of the season, but Harewood and Varney strikes were enough to lift the Seasiders up to 11th, 9 points clear of the bottom two.
The day's other fixture, saw Stoke City keep up their impressive record of winning against West Brom. Two penalties for the away side were converted by Etherington and Walters, before the latter scored his second in injury time. The Baggies' recent slip down the league table hasn't been helped by this 3-0 loss, and they now lie just two points above the drop zone.
Lets just hope given the amount of goals scored in the Premier League today, more is too come in the weekend's remaining three fixtures, tomorrow afternoon, and Monday evening!
