In the last couple of days, I have got my hands on the demo for Fifa 11. Having bought the new Fifa every single year since 1994, it is always a priority for me to check out the new one. I played them on Sega Mega Drive, then Playstation, Playstation 2, and now Xbox. And the newest edition to the series, is sure not to disappoint.
Given how realistic the games now are, it is difficult to really make major improvements from one game to the next. The demo gives you a limited insight into the game (obviously), and you can play three minute a half matches, as one of six teams from across Europe. The biggest, and most impressive, development in Fifa 11, is the invention of Personality .
What this does, is gives each individual player, unique authenticity. On and off the ball, players movement, passing style, running style etc, will reflect their play in real life. Everything down to how they kick the ball, and turn when receiving possession, is personal to that player. Even goalkeepers have been injected with this design. Each keeper will dive, kick, throw and deal with crosses, the way that they do in real life. For example, while one goalkeeper may keep it simple, another may be very acrobatic and dramatic, and this will be reflected in the gameplay.
I've found that every year, the makers of Fifa concentrate on one particular part of the gameplay, and this idea of personality, is definitely the main area of focus in this game. While it is hugely impressive and innovative, it may take regular Fifa players, a while to get used too. The ability of the gamer on the control pad, can influence the quality of a pass, as does the ability of the player you are passing with. While it makes the game much more realistic, it is also perhaps more annoying, and requires full concentration. Where as before, you could simply knock the ball around, find a pass and score a goal, now you have to look for the right pass to the right player, and consider the ability of that player before doing so. I'm sure after a few weeks, this will become second nature, and Fifa 10 will seem very outdated.
A criticism I always have of the games, is that they don't wait for the transfer window to close before completing them. You can adjust squads on the main menu, but I find it a little annoying. For example, Van der Vaart will still be at Real Madrid, and Ibrahimovic at Barcelona. This is only a minor criticism though.
Other interesting new features include be a pro mode, where you can become a manager at the end of your playing days, and also much more game play around goalkeepers, as you can start a be a pro season as a keeper. Having been impressed, if a little perplexed at first, by the demo, I definitely recommend buying Fifa 11 when it hits the shops. It is out in Britain a week today, on September 28th.
