Everyone loves a good underdog story, and there is no better stage for this too happen, than the FA Cup. England's premier domestic cup competition, has repeatedly thrown up surprises over the years, and has seen incredible journeys taken by lowly, non-league clubs. This year's fairytale adventure, could well be FC United of Manchester.
The club were set up in 2005 as a protest against the American Glazer family, buying Manchester United. After three promotions in the five years since, they now play their football in England's seventh tier of league football. But tonight has seen them progress into the second round of the FA Cup proper, meaning they are one victory away from a place in the 3rd round, when the Premier League teams enter. The ultimate fairytale ending, would be a clash against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
The non-league side raced into a 2-0 lead at League Two team Rochdale tonight, in their first ever game aired on British TV. It seemed like heartbreak would set in as fourth-tier Rochdale battled back to 2-2. But the loyal Manchester football fans, were sent into a frenzy after Norton bagged a 94th minute winner. With the rest of the second round games tomorrow, FC United of Manchester will now be eagerly awaiting the draw for the next round. And so the adventure continues ...
