2010 has seen the most exciting, breath-taking, and unpredictable Formula 1 season in history, and this weekend for the first time in 60 years, four drivers have a shot at winning the Drivers World Championship, going into the last race. Red Bull wrapping up the Constructors Title last weekend was a fair reflection that, over the season, they have been the best team and had the quickest car. But mistakes from drivers Webber and Vettel, and the occasional reliability issue, means that not only is the Drivers Title not in the bag yet, but neither of them are even in control. Instead, it is Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso, who is in pole position to win his third World Title this weekend in Abu Dhabi.
Since the first couple of weekends, five drivers have taken turns to lead the standings, and go on a successful run of Grand Prix victories. The number of contenders fell to four last weekend in Brazil, as 2009 Champion Jenson Button's title defence ended. His McLaren team mate Lewis Hamilton's aspirations to be Champion this year hang by a thread, by while it is still a mathematical possibility, who knows what could happen. Hamilton has spent most of the season battling for supremacy with Vettel and Webber, but Alonso has been by far the best driver in the last couple of months, and has stormed into the lead.
Here are the top four drivers points going into the finale, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix;
Fernando Alonso (Ferrari) - 246 points
Sebastien Vettel (Red Bull) - 231
Lewis Hamilton (McLaren) - 222
So here is a breakdown of what different results, would crown which of these four men Champion! If Alonso finishes in the top 2, no matter what else happens, he will be Champion. If the two Red Bull drivers failed to finish, Alonso would only need to finish 9th to wrap it up. As long as he finishes ahead of the two Red Bull drivers and in the points, that would be enough. If Vettel wins the race, 3rd would do.
For Webber, he needs to win in Abu Dhabi, and hope Alonso finishes 3rd or lower. So the most likely way for the Australian to triumph, is to lead home another Red Bull 1-2. Vettel like I said, has to win, and hope the Spanish Championship leader finishes 4th or lower. Lewis Hamilton's long shot, requires him to win, and hope Alonso doesn't finish, or finishes 10th. He would also need both Red Bull drivers to fail to make the podium.
While Hamilton needs a minor miracle to be crowned the 2010 Drivers World Champion, he will be encouraged by the fact he was quickest in first practice yesterday. Qualifying will take place later today, with the season's 19th and final race, taking place tomorrow, where a new Champion will be crowned.
