It seems the lobbying to host the 2018 World Cup has gone on for an age, but finally tomorrow, the votes will be cast. Bid teams from England, Russia, Belgium/Holland and Spain/Portugal, are all now doing as much last minute persuading that they should host the world's biggest tournament, in eight years time.
To try and land their first World Cup since 1966, England have sent in their own dream team, of three lions. Many people have been involved with the English bid, both behind the scenes, and famous faces getting behind it in public. But now it has been left to three of England's most influential, and well known figures, to bring the World Cup home.
Prime Minister David Cameron, former England-captain David Beckham, and future King, Prince William, are the men that all of England will be hoping can make the difference. All three seem confident that we have the strongest bid, and haven't considered defeat.
In a press conference this morning, Beckham stated that the bid had moved on from the corruption controversy, and that this will have no bearing on the final decision. December 2nd has been the date long anticipated as decision day, and it is believed each of England three lions will be fighting up until the final minutes, to try and secure every last important vote. While it can not obviously be stated whether a vote has been secured, the signs seem good.
In my mind, there can only be one country which lands the 2018 World Cup, and that is England. The passion for football in our country is unrivalled worldwide, and the tournament would leave a legacy for decades to come. One key issue seems to have been persuading the voting panel, that the English media would be behind the bid. But given that there have been no investigations or negative reporting of the upcoming 2012 London Olympics, we seem to have put minds at rest on that point.
The Stadia offered in England is incredible. We already have The Emirates Stadium, the new Wembley, Old Trafford, City of Manchester Stadium, St James' Park, Stadium of Light and many more. By 2018, there will also be the brand new Olympic Stadium, and Liverpool, Tottenham and Bristol City will all have beautiful new stadiums built.
The only thing to do now is wait for the decision tomorrow. But hopefully, the 2018 World Cup will be heading to England, and excitement can already start to build.
