England cruise to Second Test Victory

December 7th 2010 11:31

England have completed an emphatic innings and 71 runs win over Australia in the second Ashes test in Adelaide, to take a 1-0 lead in the five match series. The tourists dominated the test from start to finish, on top in each of the five days of play. It took only one hour of play on day five, to wrap up the convincing victory.

Back on Day One, a fantastic bowling display from England's attack, saw Australia skittled out for 245. Following on from their sensational batting performance in the first test, the tourists then ended day two completely on top, after another Alastiar Cook century. He eventually made 148, along with 78 from Trott, and 68 not out from the impressive Ian Bell. But Kevin Pietersen was the star of the show, scoring a career best 227. He was eventually out as England pushed on for quick runs at the start of day Four.

Australia did show some resilience on the penultimate day, after England declared 620-5. They battled against an inevitable defeat, with Watson, Hussey and Clarke all passing fifty. A rare test wicket for Kevin Pietersen, dismissing Michael Clarke for 80 with the last delivery of day four, meant England were on the brink of going ahead in the series however, going into the final day.

No such resilience came from the hosts on day five. The last five wickets tumbled for just 43 runs, as they were bowled out for 305. After being criticised in the first test, Graeme Swann got a five wicket haul in the second innings, proving to be a difference maker.

Aussie skipper Ricky Ponting admitted after the match, his side were 'out batted, out bowled and out fielded' by their opposition. Based on this performance, and thumping result, England look good to retain the Ashes.

The Third Test begins on the 16th, with Australia desperately needing an improvement before then. 1-0 to England in this year's Ashes series.

I thought England had a chance going into the series, but didn't expect them to take a test this comfortably. Very impressive!

Pietersen has to be the man, but most importantly, the Aussie side will be hunting for that curator who earned the wrath from KP enough for him to go and score the 200!

I say,

get rid of Ponting!
Then offer Shane Warne the job!

The rot is within the ACB selection committee, who use social politics as a decider as to who gets the nod.

It is a joke, and our cricketing star has well and truly faded.

Having grown up watching McGrath, Warne, Brett Lee and the likes, I never thought i'd say this .... but i can't see Australia taking 20 wickets in a test match this series! Can you?

Hi Matt,
you never can tell... maybe you will be right?

I just cannot believe that they have allowed Ponting to stayin so long, when you look at his batting stats the last four years, they are not good, very inconsistant and others in the team were dropped when they were performing better than Ponting.

Personally, I think it became obvious when Ponting was given the annual award and some other dolt scored higher than Warnbe who was almost single handedly responsible for the wins that season, his last season, he dropped out becuase the ACB wouldn't give him a go at captain.

Now we are reaping the rewards of that lack of foresight. They are trying to build Ponting into a legend, when he is really a just better than average player all round.

Obviously as i don't get chance to follow much Australian cricket, I didn't realise what a slump Ponting was in! It was a similar situation for England when Michael Vaughan's career was ending, so well respected, but the fact was that he wasn't good enough anymore

I've seen this morning Aussies have made FIVE changes to their 12 man squad for third test, lets hope for you it works. Lets hope for me, it doesn't!

hehe! Well put and typically British of you old top!

Ponting, as Captain, you might remember during the test at Lords, last Ashes, was the fits Aussie captain in 70 years to lose at Lords!

And of course he lost the Ashes.

This was good actually, losing the Ashes, as it rekindled a new interest and fervour in Britain well, England mainly I guess, in your cricket team.

After so many years of Aussie dominance, and extremely bad sportsmanship by the Aussies, the Poms finally got their own back, slagging off and being hostile and, horoor of horrors, presenting brilliant bowlers, batters and fieldsmen!

But, this new era came by way of...old Aussie cricketers teaching our great adversaries, you Poms, how to play cricket! hehe!!

Personally, I sincerely hope we lose, the ACB then needs a big broom, new blood everywhere. Yet, I also feel this great game from the English, is seeing its day draw to a close, Oz has too many sports now, AFL and NRL footy, Rugby, basketball, golf, swimming, soccer (your football), and heals more!

It is ridiculous for a country of 22 million to indulge in so many sports..

cheers
