Before this Ashes series began, the biggest doubt in the England side, was the form of opening batsmen Alastair Cook. How quickly things can change in sport! He now holds the record for the longest run between dismissals, of any English batsmen ever. And in the process of his record breaking effort, England are now in a great position in the second test.
Cook scored 235 not out in the second innings of the first test, following his 67 in the first. The first innings of this second test, has seen him end day two not out on 136. This now makes it 1022 minutes since he was last dismissed, in which time he has amassed 371 runs. His average for this Ashes series right now, stands at an impressive 438.
After Australia were bowled out for 245 on day one, England ended the second day 317-2, 72 runs ahead. Andrew Strauss was again gone early, scoring just one run, giving the hosts a perfect start to the day, reducing England to 3-1. But two very impressive partnerships followed. First, after their record breaking unbeaten stand in the first test, Cook and Trott put on 173, before Trott was gone for 78.
The day ended with Cook and Pietersen putting on 141 and counting. Cook looked unstoppable on 136 not out at the end of the day, with KP 85 unbeaten. Could Pietersen be set to finally get a test century tomorrow, his first in 18 months? With these two at the crease, and Collingwood, Bell, Prior, Swann and Broad to come, England's lead should be a lot bigger than the 72 runs it is right now, by the end of day three.
