Chelsea Throws Away A Legend
July 7th 2008 15:57
So Chelsea have been given a formal offer by Inter Milan, for England’s Frank Lampard. To which I would hope they are prepared to turn down the offer, as Lampard has become the hero of Chelsea in most respects. Not to mention Inter’s offer of £6.5million is a sort of insult to such a valuable component of any squad, age notwithstanding. But Lampard seems as though he may be up for leaving to rejoin Jose Mourinho.
With the death of his mother during last season, Lampard doesn’t really have any ties to stay in London and continue playing with Chelsea. So I see him as considering this to be the perfect opportunity to make an exit for Italy. Which I can completely understand, as who wouldn’t want to play abroad at least once, especially under a fantastic manager the likes of Jose. But I don’t get why Chelsea don’t have any fight for him.
I’ve written about it a lot, but that doesn’t make the point less relevant. Chelsea need to turn down this offer, and get Frank to sign an extension to his current contract, which runs out next year.
Although, maybe they consider him old news, after having acquired Deco, being likely to acquire Ronaldinho, and supposedly even making a huge bid for AC Milan’s Kaka. Sure if they miraculously acquire those three, that would be fantastic. But again, none of them are proven in the Premiership style of play. Shevchenko was supposed to be amazing for Chelsea, and look what happened. He came from Italy, and apparently forgot that English football is a little different from the Italian style, and is now a useless bench component on a club that has too much depth to waste the space.
I would have hoped Scolari would seek the right players for his system, not just the biggest stars he can attract.
But enough about Chelsea’s endless stupidity for giving up the fantastic and proven Lampard.
In other news of note, Peter Crouch will be going to Portsmouth, as Liverpool have accepted a bid from Pompey for the big man. The funny thing is that Liverpool’s asking price was £15million, but reportedly Redknapp has acquired the England International for only £10million. Which leads me to believe that Liverpool must be desperate for money to fund their transfer campaign.
Also considering that Juventus may be backing off Xabi Alonso as they seem unwilling to offer up the £16million that would be necessary to acquire the Spaniard’s services from Liverpool. Which will prove me right, if suddenly Liverpool doesn’t have an issue lowering their transfer price.
Right now Benitez has to be desperate for cash, as he seems convinced that Liverpool need new players to make the team ready to be more competitive for the Premiership title. Which maybe they do, but Benitez isn’t looking at what Liverpool really need, in defenders. You’ve got loads of attacking power, now you need to plug up the holes in defense. So sell Crouch and Alonso, and buy a better defender, because Riise is awful anytime he’s on the pitch anymore. Not to mention Carragher is getting old, and Hyypia is already too old and slow to be reliable enough in the top-flight of the Premiership or Champions League.
