Tonight saw an absolute classic in the League Cup at Stamford Bridge, as the unstoppable Chelsea, were knocked out by Newcastle United. The Premier league leaders teamsheet included John Terry, Nicholas Anelka, Ramires, Bennayoun and Sturridge, a very strong line-up. The Magpies on the other hand, made 10 changes from the side that won at Everton at the weekend. So surely it would be a stroll for Chelsea.
Well, so it seemed when former Mag Patrick Van Aanholt put the home team ahead after six minutes. But in an incredible turn around, Nile Ranger and Ryan Taylor put Newcastle in front 2-1 at half time, before Ameobi extended the advantage early in the second half.
The last twenty minutes provided great entertainment. Anelka scored on 70 minutes to really rattle the Toon nerves. An 87th minute penalty was cooly converted by Anelka for his second, and making it 3-3. At this point, the end to end game seemed to be heading Chelsea's way given their impressive come back. But Shola Ameobi had other ideas, heading home Jonas Guttierez's injury time corner, to give Newcaslte a hugely dramatic winner.
This has been one of the best nights I can remember in recent years as a Newcastle United fan, a 4-3 win away against possibly the best team in Europe right now, and with our reserves. Given the exits in this round from Chelsea, Manchester City, Tottenham and Everton, there's every chance our cup run could continue a bit longer yet.
But being a Magpies fan, you tend to get used to this sort of drama. Only we could win away at Chelsea and Everton in a week, beat Aston Villa 6-0, but get beaten at home by Blackpool! Knowing the usual course of events at Newcastle, we'll get beaten at home by Stoke at the weekend! But if we could get three points at St James' Park saturday, it would be an absolutely fantastic start to the campaign. But what a night!
