Champions League Tonight!

September 28th 2010 11:44
Didier Drogba Marseille

There are eight Champions League games tonight, as the competition enters round two of the group games. In this half of the draw, next week will see a lot of big teams go up against each other, but for tonight, it is pretty straight forward to pick the favourite in every game.

From an English perspective, despite both losing at the weekend, I expect both Arsenal and Chelsea to both comfortably get the three points. Didier Drogba will face his old side, Marseille, at Stamford Bridge, and will be desperate to put his, and the team's poor performance on Saturday behind them. I expect Chelsea will win this one, but the French side won't give up easily. The other game in the group sees Spartak Moscow host Zilina, as the Russians go in search of another three points, after their impressive win at Marseille last week.

After putting six past Braga in their opening group game, Arsenal are faced with a tricky trip to Partizan Belgrade. The Serbian side have made it to this stage of the competition for the first time in seven years, last time they beat a certain Newcastle United in a qualifier, and will put everything into beating Arsenal, to make a statement. This should be an interesting contest, and if Arsenal turn up, which they didn't on Saturday, they should win. In the other game in the group, Braga have a must win game against Shacktar Donetsk, to make up for their drumming at Arsenal last week.

Cristiano Ronaldo

Possibly the most anticipated game of tonight, will be in Holland, as Ajax take on AC Milan. The Italian side are obviously favourites, but with Real Madrid also in the group, they can't afford any slip ups in this one, against a dangerous team. Mourinho's Madrid team travel to Auxerre in one is another potentially difficult match. With Real failing to make it past the competition's last 16 stage for seven years, they will really want top spot in the group, so need to take six points from the games against Auxerre.

The final two games of the evening see Roma face Club Cluj, and Bayern Munich travel to Basle. When the draw was made, it seemed straight forward to predict Bayern and Roma to progress. But as they met in the opening game, with the Germans coming out on top, there is a chance for Romanian side Cluj, who won their opening game, to cause an upset. If they could take something from the game in Italy tonight, they would be in a good position in the group. However, I do expect the two favourites to come through on the night.

So it isn't a night, billed with blockbuster matches, but as always with the Champions League, it is sure to deliver entertainment and goals.

Do you know how many of the teams will be resting players. I know tommorow that Manchester United is resting Rooney.

Rooney and Scholes haven't even travelled with Man Utd. As for tonight, I don't think too many Arsenal or Chelsea players will be. Almunia is 'rested' for Arsenal, but after the weekend he is more probably dropped! and also lampard still injured for Chelsea! Besides that, and injuries already in place, don't expect too many surprises in team selection

Just realised listening to radio i've mislead, drogba is actually suspended for tonight's game! Anelka will lead the Chelsea attack, forgot still serving ban for sending off in last season's defeat against Inter!

Well Spartak got the easy win earlier in the late games what is the best match.

I know you like the AJAX vs Milan game. I am really looking forward to see how Arsenal and Bayern do.

Well despite obviously being an English football fan, i'd have to say Arsenal and Chelsea's groups look least interesting tonight! Ajax v Milan should be a great game, while Bayern's group should be good! Basel are a good team and could upset Bayern, while Cluj could be very tough opponents for Roma in other game in group! I expect this group to be a lot closer than it looks at first glance! Will have to wait and see not long now!

With out a doubt Valencia vs Manchester United is the game to watch tommorow.

Schalke 04 vs Benfica should be a good game also.

Really looking forward to Valencia v Man Utd as well, really can't call it! And there should be some goals in Schalke v Benfica (now that i've said that probably finish 0-0!)
