Today a five-man short list for BBC African Footballer of the Year was announced, with three of the men on the list Premier League footballers. Andre Ayew and Asamoah Gyan of Ghana, Samuel Eto'o of Cameroon, and Ivory Coast duo Yaya Toure and Didier Drogba make up the nominees.
Ayew and Gyan played starring roles in Ghana's progress to the World Cup quarter finals this summer in South Africa. Since then, Gyan moved to Sunderland for a club record £16 million, and is settling in well, scoring 4 goals in his last 4 games. Eto'o helped Inter Milan to a treble of league and cup, and Champions League last season, while his World Cup form was disappointing. Toure was on the fringe of Barcelona's La Liga winning side, and has then moved onto Manchester City, becoming the best paid footballer in English football. While Ivory Coast went out of the World Cup at the group stage, Drogba was in blistering form again for Chelsea last season, helping them secure a league and cup double.
32-year-old Drogba won the award in 2009, and will be looking to be only the second man to win the award twice, following Jay Jay Okocha in 2003 and 2004. Other Premier League players to win the award have been El-Hadj Diouf (2002), Michael Essien (2006) and Emmanuel Adebayor (2007). The winner of the 2010 award will be announced on December 17th.
