Back a couple of months ago, a 30 man shortlist was announced, from which one footballer would be named Fifa World Footballer of the Year. The newly combined award constists of the former European and World Player of the year titles, making one man, the FIFA World Ballon d'or winner 2010.
That shortlist has now been narrowed down to just three men. And for the first time in forty years, one club can boast having all three. Barcelona trio Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta and Xavi, are the contenders. Argentinian Messi won what would have been this award in 2009, and will be favourite again this year, having scored 34 goals in 2010.
Xavi and Iniesta were instrumental in Spain's World Cup victory. Personally, despite being a huge admirer of both of the Spanish midfielders, Messi has to win the award.
The three managers on the shortlist for the managers award, are Spain boss Vicente Del Bosque, Barcelona's Pep Guardialo, and Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho. The winners will be announced on January 10th.
