Bale takes apart Inter

Gareth Bale in Spurs 3-1 win against Inter

Two weeks ago in the San Siro, a Gareth Bale hat trick brought Spurs back from 4-0 down, to lose 4-3 against European champions Inter. It seemed impossible, but last night the Welshman, was even better. He was man of the match as goals from Van der Vaart, Crouch and Pavlyuchecko gave Tottenham a 3-1 victory, despite Samuel Eto'o scoring yet again in the competition. The result puts the English side top of the group, and on the cusp of qualification, for the first knock out stage. Werder Bremen are unlikely to be a threat in the group, after losing 2-0 at home against FC Twente. So Spurs and Inter have 7 points, Twente 5 and Bremen just 2.

Rubin Kazan and Panathanoikos both needed victory in their Group D clash, but it ended goalless. This means that despite only drawing 1-1, Copenhagen and Barcelona look set to be in the next round, Lionel Messi on target again for Barca. Group B saw the best game of the night, as Lyon battled back from 4-0 down at Benfica, to lose 4-3. Schalke's dismal draw in Tel Aviv means all is now to play for, with only 3 points seperating Lyon, Benfica and Schalke.

Finally in Group B, Manchester United and Valencia took firm control, both comfortably winning 3-0. Goals from Bebe, Obertan and Fletcher gave United an impressive win in Turkey, always a tough place to go for any team. Valencia routed Rangers thanks to a Roberto Soldado double, and a late Facundo Costa strike. It isn't over for Rangers though, just two points behind Valencia, and Bursaspor and Man Utd at home to come. But Manchester United look as good as through! So no teams are as yet through to the last 16 in this year's Champions League, but Bursaspor and Tel Aviv, have the unwanted tag of first teams eliminated.
