Hopeful for Aston Villa, are the moves Martin O’Neill looks to be making in this summer’s transfer market. Given their already strong attacking prowess, especially with all but acquired Steve Sidwell to bolster mid-field, despite the inevitable loss of Gareth Barry sooner rather than later. Plus O’Neill is setting up the best possible outcome for Villa through Barry’s departure, in his new proposal for Liverpool to purchase Gareth Barry.
O’Neill is reported in the Daily Mirror as saying Liverpool need to offer up £17million to be paid over the next two years as a transfer fee, as well as defender Steve Finnan, if they have any hopes to see Barry this August. O’Neill is also after Portuguese right-back Miguel from Valencia. Reportedly O’Neill hopes to use the transfer money acquired from the sale of Barry to pick up the defender.
Which could make Villa brilliant next season, as Sidwell is a much better mid-field attacking leader than Gareth Barry will ever be. Not to mention plugging up the goal leakage in defense that hampered Villa’s chances last season, could make them a force to be reckoned with.
Not having to worry about your defense, and allowing the attackers to roam free, now Villa will have Agbonlahor, Ashley Young, and John Carew to light up the score sheet. With Reo-Coker and the newly acquired Sidwell to keep your mid-field serving the attackers. Suddenly, boom. You have the team that held the top spot for a few weeks last season, only now they’re poised to hold it for longer.
I’m going to put my guarantee stamp this early before the season, on Villa making at the least UEFA Cup football next season. If they can acquire Finnan and Miguel, they’re right back into contention for finishing top five. And finally they’ll have the defensive depth to outlast Everton.
