Given the high level of hyperbole which surrounds sport, the reporting of football often sees words and phrases become over used. A great. A genius. A legend. One of the best players ever. Well you can use all of the above, and any other superlatives you care to throw in, to describe Barcelona forward Lionel Messi. He proved again yesterday in a friendly in Qatar, that he is an incredibly special player.
A major talking point before kick off, was the recall of 30-year-old Ronaldinho to the Brazil side. Playing off teenage striker Neymar, the AC Milan playmaker was at the heart of most good things Brazil did in the first half, which they probably edged. Dani Alves went closest by hitting the crossbar, while Messi responded by hitting the post for Argentina. Despite being goalless at the break, it was an entertaining contest between these great enemies.
The game seemed to drift away in the second period, as both side's new managers made substitutions, probably to stay in club manager's good books. As the crowd seemed to accept the inevitable 0-0 draw was coming, Lionel Messi had other ideas. In injury time he beat two defenders, before expertly firing past substitute goalkeeper Victor, to win it for Argentina. It was yet another piece of magic from the man likely to be named World Footballer of the Year for a second time next month, and won the bragging rights for Argentina, in the constant fight for supremacy in South American football.
