Yesterday brought great news for Newcastle United fans, that number 9 Andy Carroll, has signed a new five-year contract at the club. The 21-year-old Gateshead born striker, will now extend his stay until 2015. Given his impressive start to life in the Premier League, and having come through our youth academy, Andy is important to NUFC's future, and it is great to have him sign the new deal. Though in the past, I have been excited to see Milner and N'Zogbia sign new five-year deals, only to both leave within 18 months.
However, Carroll sounds very committed to the club. Speaking after putting pen to paper, he said; 'All I have ever wanted to do is play for Newcastle United. That's been the case since I was a teenager, playing in the Juniors and Reserves, and it's still the same now'.
Carroll is one of a number of great youth products to have come through the club in recent years. Goalkeepers Tim Krul and Fraser Forster look set for bright futures, while the likes of Shane Ferguson, Ryan Donaldson, Haris Vuckic, Kazenga Lua Lua and Nile Ranger, have impressed in the games they have had. Of course there is also Steven Taylor. The 24-year-old centre back, was until recently the face of our future, the academy product taking us into a brighter new age. But as his contract negotiations ramble on, his deal is set to expire next summer, and he is currently injured and on the transfer list. Hopefully, he will follow Carroll and sign the dotted line.
But Andy Carroll's new deal is great news for Toon supporters, and will now hopefully dispense rumours of a move in January, with Tottenham one of the names being mentioned. After four goals in his first three Premier League games of the season, he hasn't scored in his last four, but after a rest during the International break, hopefully he will be on top form against Wigan, next Saturday.
