For the second time this week in the Premier League, it has been proved that top class football really lacks one thing ... loyalty! Blackburn Rovers have shockingly sacked Sam Allardyce, just days after he was being mentioned as a potential successor to Fabio Capello, as the next England manager. Had Rovers won at Bolton on Sunday, they would be 6th in the league. But instead, after a 2-1 defeat, they are now managerless.
I really do feel for Big Sam. He did a tremendous job establishing Bolton as a Premier League club, before guiding Newcastle United too 8th in his eight months in charge, before being shown the door. And after saving Blackburn from relegation after taking the reigns in December 2008, he guided them to a very respectable 10th placed finish last term.
But after the Lancashire club were recently taken over by the Venky's Group from India, the new owners obviously felt a change in manager was neccesary. While his Premier League record can not be argued with, Big Sam's tactics have often been called into question. Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, a lover of playing beautiful football, has been critical of Allardyce's way of setting out his team's on more than one occasion
But this has come as a huge surprise to the fans, players and to Sam Allardyce himself. He has stated that; 'I am very shocked and disappointed to be leaving Blackburn. I am extremely proud to have managed this club and enjoyed a fantastic relationship with the players, my staff and the supporters during my time in charge.
Given that the rich new owners are obviously very ambitious, it will be interesting to see what manager will replace the outgoing gaffer. Will a big name take the post? We will have to wait and see!
