A Few Gunners Go To Spain

Barcelona are set to become the new Arsenal, at least in player form to some extent, as Emmanuel Adebayor has been linked with a £24million move to Spain. Alexander Hleb has also reportedly been piquing interest from Barcelona. Both players are amazing on a technical level, and would be well suited to life in Spain, where individual technical skill dominates play.
Hleb is fairly gun-shy in front of goal, but having Messi as a target, not to mention bringing in the fantastic goal scoring of Adebayor, should well more than solve that.
Hopefully for Barcelona’s sake, Arsenal’s players are the only thing the Spanish club takes as inspiration, because Arsenal’s penchant for choking towards season end of late is widely known. And Barcelona is becoming Spain’s answer to Arsenal’s reputation anyways, without having to acquire some unlucky Arsenal players in the process.
In other news of note, Michael Owen is yet to sign a new contract with Newcastle United, and is unspecified as to whether he will remain with the club. I personally hope he will take his talents elsewhere, as his recent return to goal scoring form should belong to a club that has at least the slightest opportunity to get somewhere.
Newcastle has always been somewhat of a cruel joke to me. A club with immense popularity, and a horrifically faithful supporter base, even with attendance averages towards the top of the Premier League. But still, even though on paper they should be a big club, Newcastle have so much trouble cracking the top of the table, and solving their problem in having a vast empty trophy room.
Finally today, I thought it was funny that Scolari’s biggest fear for Portugal going into their match up against Germany, is the height advantage Germany has over his squad. The average height for Portugal is 5’9, and the average for the Germans is 6’0. I don’t understand how it matters that much, as Cristiano Ronaldo would tower even over Peter Crouch with his jumping ability, going into a header. Not to mention Portugal’s advantage in individual tech skill on the ball, and speed. All of which should matter more than three inches of height. But I’m not a brilliant manager like Scolari, who can’t even play Ronaldo in a position in which he can do the most damage, half the time.
After all, you have to be a brilliant manager to fail at playing the best footballer in the world in a proper position to best harness his talent.
